Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Carchi, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A hand-built terracotta male Coquero sitting on a bench, as was the custom for males of this genre. Nude except for a sash, the gent holds a round olla in both upraised hands, his bent arms resting on his thighs. Perhaps the most prominent feature of his minimalistic visage is one protruding cheek, holding a wad of coca leaves. Otherwise, his visage is relatively simple with almond-shaped eyes, a protruding nose, slit and slightly smiling mouths, and a caplike coiffure. The ingestion of coca is associated in ancient South American societies with a transformative state and this figure's face, with its huge, bulging eyes, seems to suggest that he is in a trance. A wonderful example from the ancients of the Andes! Size: 5.5" L x 4.25" W x 8.375" H (14 cm x 10.8 cm x 21.3 cm)
