Lot 545
Ancient Near East, Southwestern Iran, Elamite, ca. 1100 to 900 BCE. Carved from dark bitumen, this cylinder seal presents a sacred tree framed by rearing quadrupeds, arranged between upper and lower ground lines. The tree is rendered with a straight trunk crown of three primary branches with two smaller lower branches, while the flanking animals are identified as horned bovines or lions. Star motifs appear as fillers within the scene, and a rosette serves as a terminal element, completing the composition. Noted in an accompanying typewritten description signed by Professor Wilfred George Lambert (1926-2011), the seal is described as an Elamite example in very good condition. Size: 1" L x 0.5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm)
Provenance: private London, UK collection; acquired on the London art market; formerly in the private collection of D. Ruskin, Oxford, 1990s
