Description:

Ancient Eastern Mediterranean, likely Classical to Hellenistic period (cir., ca. 500 - 201 BCE. A bronze pilos helmet of the type worn by Greek infantry and cavalry across the Classical and Hellenistic world, its simple hemispherical crown and gently flared rim raised to a smooth, taut profile that has lost none of its quiet authority. The pilos — named for the felt cap it emulates — was among the most widely adopted helmet forms of the period, valued for its light weight, unobstructed peripheral vision, and ease of manufacture. Size: 9" W x 6.75" H x 8" D (22.9 cm W x 17.1 cm H x 20.3 cm D)

This example is enveloped in a rich, variegated patina of malachite green with areas of deeper oxidation, the surface textures of long burial transformed into an almost painterly effect that enhances rather than obscures the helmet's clean geometry. The flared rim is intact and even, the crown retains its original curvature without deformation.

This piece has been tested for the presence or absence of particular elements via XRF elemental analysis and is consistent with metals of this period.

Provenance: private London, United Kingdom collection, ex Peter Till collection, Vienna 1990s.
