Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of 24 karat gold earrings of a sinuous design, one with a spiraled upper terminus and three gold loops at the opposite end. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - apparently adored earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Size: decorative element measures 1.25" L x .75" W (3.2 cm x 1.9 cm) Weight: 8.3 grams
