Description:

Ancient Greece, Caria Islands, Rhodes, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A fine 99% silver ancient Greek drachm coin set in a modern gold pendant setting as a wearable necklace! The coin's obverse displays the radiate head of Apollo (Helios) facing slightly right, and the reverse features a rose with a bud to right and palm branch to left. The rose was a symbol and visual pun on the city name "Rhodos" (Rhodes) so that even illiterate citizens could identify the coin's origin! The coin is set in a modern 14K gold open pendant, the coin visible on both sides, with a faceted ruby set into the bail loop. The pendant is strung on a modern cord with a lobster clasp, but could easily be switched to a chain or more elegant necklace cord! Size of pendant: 1.3" L x 0.8" W (3.3 cm x 2 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); silver quality: 99%; gold quality: 58.3% (equivalent to 14K); weight: 10.5 grams

Provenance: private Superior, Colorado, USA collection acquired prior to 2010.
