Description:

Southwestern India or southern Pakistan, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. This is a beautifully shaped weapon with great patina and age. It has a wide ridge and a leaf-like shape with a flat, flared non-cutting end. Flat axes without shaft holes have been found at several famous archaeological sites in the region -- Mohenjodaro and Harappa in Pakistan, and Lothal and Rangpur in India. These axe-blades would have been laid in a split handle and secured to it with thongs of raw hide. Size: 7.2" L x 1.5" W (18.3 cm x 3.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
