Lot 142A
Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, ca. 200 BCE to 1600s CE. A collection of eleven ancient tools from the Beringian coastal regions, associated with the Old Bering Sea, Punuk, Thule, and ancestral Inuit cultures. Comprising nine walrus ivory and marine mammal bone harpoon heads and two additional hunting or survival implements, this group illustrates the technological sophistication of Arctic subsistence cultures before European contact. Several of the harpoon points are slotted for inset stone blades and pierced with suspension holes for cords. Others are long, tapered, and barbed, with tangs for mounting onto shafts. The large, dark brown, multi-barbed specimen originates from Unimak Island, while the thick, rectangular piece with a pierced tip was collected from Point Barrow. Size of longest: 6" L x 0.6" W (15.2 cm x 1.5 cm)
