Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Northern Italy, Villanovan or Early Etruscan culture, ca. 9th to 6th century BCE; Roman Empire, Republic to Imperial period, ca. 4th century BCE to 3rd century CE. A collection of 3 bronze fibulae; a Roman crossbow and knee type of fibula, and a Villanovan fibula with rings. The first two types of fibulae are often found in military graves, and they seem to have been very popular with the Roman army. The largest and oldest is a bow shaped fibula with separately cast rings suspended from the pin - the rings may have aided in securing clothing or simply added decoration as a grave good. Size of crossbow fibula: 2.6" L x 2" W x 1" H (6.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 2.5 cm)
