Description:

**Originally Listed At $250**

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Guerrero region, Chontal, Late Preclassic period, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. A stone face that may have been used as a funerary mask / head with string cut and polished features that are soft but still discernable. Carved from a dense volcanic or metasedimentary stone rich in silicates, consistent with local greenstone varieties, the stone presents a subtle pale greenish-grey coloration with a slightly granular texture. Facial features include a pronounced browline arching across the forehead, a raised nasal ridge, a subtle groove demarcating the mouth, and faint shaping along the sides to suggest the presence of ears. Scholars believe that stone visages were tied to funerary bundles of the noble elite to mark their passing and give them identity in the grave. Size: 5.75" L x 4" W (14.6 cm x 10.2 cm)
