Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peruvian Coast, Chancay Culture, c., ca. 1200 CE. One look at this endearing pair suggests that the Chancay appreciated llamas for their utility as well as contrary personality. The llama was the only domesticated animal of the ancient Americas that served as a beast of burden. These llama effigies are elegantly simple in form and decoration, as is characteristic of Chancay artistry. The bodies of these forms assume the shape of a sweet potato with one end turned up to represent a tail and the other extended to represent the head and neck. The cone-shaped legs are short by design, ideal for supporting this fragile ceramic form. The forms are slip- decorated in an almond brown on cream background with details indicating saddle blankets, tethering ropes and halters. Size of largest: 11" W x 4" H x 3.5" D (27.9 cm W x 10.2 cm H x 8.9 cm D)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, 2025; ex-Barakat Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, acquired between 1985 and 2003
