Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A large ceramic figural jar depicting a standing individual with minimalist anatomical features and an expressive face, hands held forward offering a conical cup. The vessel is surmounted by a flat, open-topped headdress, suggesting use as a burial urn or ritual container. Painted motifs on the face in dark umber evoke tattooing or ceremonial body paint, framed by pierced ears adorned with large circular earspools - traditional symbols of high status. The figure's prominent torso is rounded and voluminous with a rounded base that may have been placed in loose sand / earth to sand upright. Incised linear detailing accents the headband and shoulders, emphasizing textile-like embellishments. Size: 9.5" W x 20" H (24.1 cm x 50.8 cm)
