Description:

Rome, ca. 2nd century CE. Hand-molded terracotta oil lamp covered with depictions of grapes and grape vines. Perfect example for any wine lover's collection! Lamps such as this were filled with olive oil in ancient times and lit by means of a thick wick, which protruded from the nozzle end. The flickering light of the oil lamp was man's primary means of illuminating the darkness long before gas-lamps and modern electricity. Size: 3-3/4"L (9.53 cm) x 2-1/2"H (6.35 cm). Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #95021
