Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, ca. 800 to 300 BCE. A collection of 6 ancient Thai pottery vessels from the neolithic culture named after the famous Ban Chiang archeological site. Two in this group exhibit a textured patterning across their bodies via pressing into the wet clay. This pottery was made by hand using a paddle and anvil to shape the profile and then incising the cord-marked design, utilizing fibrous materials such as rope, or incised with a stylus, likely made of wood. Ban Chiang is considered by UNESCO to be the most important prehistoric settlement so far found in Southeast Asia with a vibrant pottery tradition.
