Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A beautiful example of a deep brown-etched-on-white agate stone dZi bead, with highly abstract motifs of circles and either curving or straight lines around it. It is rounded in cross-section, with a slightly bowed-out center. For non-Tibetans, genuine dZi beads are made of agate, with sharply delineated patterns, symmetrical shapes, strong color, a glossy surface, and no flaws in the design. Ethnographic interviews tell us that to Tibetans, genuine dZi beads must also be free from defilement and possess amuletic powers. Size: 1.5" W (3.8 cm)
