Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A redware pottery effigy vessel of a seated hunchback figure, created with the smooth, burnished surface typical of Colima craftsmanship. The figure sits with outstretched legs and rounded feet, arms held slightly forward, and a pronounced hunch on the back. Dark pigments are painted as a loin cloth, and a diagonal stripe like a sash is painted across the chest and vertically down the spine. A flared spout rises from the top of the head, indicating that this was likely used as a vessel, perhaps in ritual or funerary contexts. Such figures were placed in shaft tombs as offerings, believed to serve as companions or guardians in the afterlife. Size: 6.5" W x 9" H (16.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
