Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and burnished redware pottery seated figure, likely created to be placed in a shaft tomb as a ceremonial companion, guardian, or ancestral representation. The figure is shown seated with bent arms adorned with applied armbands. The elongated head displays slit eyes, a prominent nose, and a narrow mouth, while a series of punctate markings along the ears suggest the presence of earrings. A subtle ridge along the crown may indicate a hairline or headdress. Faint black linear markings, possibly representing tattooing or body paint, are visible across the torso. At the top of the head is a large vent opening leading into the hollow interior, suggesting the piece may also have functioned as a vessel for offerings. Size: 5.5" W x 10.5" H (14 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from a Los Angeles, California, USA gallery acquisition dates range from the late 1990s to 2005
