Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. A large, hand-built bi-chrome terracotta vessel of a characteristic egg-shape depicting an anthropomorphic figure presenting a rotund body with two projecting hands, a wide neck displaying an expressive face, and a flared rim, with a strap handle on the verso. The intriguing countenance is comprised of circular eyes with dotted diagonal lines emerging from the outer corners, a thin nose, perky ears, and a closed mouth adorned by horizontal lines to perhaps represent tattoos or facial hair. This vessel is decorated in a classic Chancay brown-on-cream color schema, imbuing it with ample character and charm! Size: 9.5" in diameter x 13.75" H (24.1 cm x 34.9 cm)

Provenance: private Allison collection, Kent, Washington, USA, inherited in the mid-1970s
