Description:

North America, Tlingit or Haida, Pacific Northwest, late 19th to early 20th century. A finely crafted Northwest Coast bentwood storage box, of rectangular form, constructed from red cedar planks, with original iron hardware and a hinged lid. The surfaces are adorned with bold, fluid black and red pigment designs in traditional formline style, likely representing a stylized zoomorphic or mythological face motif, such as a bear, raven, or supernatural being. Size: 14.88" W x 10" L x 7.75" H (37.8 cm x 25.4 cm x 19.7 cm)

The face motif dominates the front panel, with large ovoid eyes, U-shapes, and split-U elements — signature components of Tlingit or Haida visual language. Boxes of this type were highly valued among Northwest Coast peoples and served both functional and ceremonial roles: storing clan regalia, heirlooms, or potlatch goods, and were often considered important expressions of lineage identity and spiritual power. Rarely do such boxes feature a metal locking mechanism, which may suggest later adaptation during the period of Euro-American contact and trade, while still retaining its deeply rooted Indigenous artistry.
