Description:

United States, Ohio, Heisey & Co., ca. 1911 to 1938 CE. An absolutely stunning glass punch bowl adorned with a Greek key design from the Art Deco period of American entertaining. The enormous bowl sits atop a tall, elegant pedestal which stands on a wide platter. Clustered around it are 24 cups with delicate handles. Size of individual cup: 3.95" L x 3" W x 2" H (10 cm x 7.6 cm x 5.1 cm); size of stand: 9.5" W x 7.9" H (24.1 cm x 20.1 cm); size of platter: 21.15" W x 1.7" H (53.7 cm x 4.3 cm); size of bowl: 14.5" W x 17.35" H (36.8 cm x 44.1 cm).

All share the unified theme of the Greek key design (called Grecian Border by Heisey, but Greek key by collectors) occupying a register around the upper section of the bowl, above the rest of its scalloped body and mirrored in its placement around the body of each cup and around the underside of the platter. The stand also presents this design around both top and bottom, with scalloped glass between. All have the distinctive Heisey maker's mark, an "H" inside of a diamond. Although an ancient symbol, the Greek key is often associated with Art Deco design, perhaps because of its geometric, regular form - corresponding to the tiered and stacked architectural shapes of the period and designed to evoke a sleek futurism.

Many of the molds for these items were destroyed during WWII, but the one for the punch bowl itself was not destroyed and is currently held at the National Heisey Glass Museum in Newark, Ohio. These items were intended for use in hotels, restaurants, bars, soda fountains, ice cream parlors, and at home, with the punch bowl set specifically marketed to hotels. Imagine how beautiful this piece would have looked, sparkling in the low light of a hotel ballroom!
