Description:

Mexico, ca. 1800-1900. A sweet antique Mexican retablo depicting the Holy Family. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This example features the Holy Family - Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child, brightly painted against a dark background. The Parents grasp the Child's wrists on either side, steadying him as he toddles, and his outstretched arms subtly foreshadow the Crucifixion. The Holy Mother is dressed in pink and yellow, matching the Child. Her head is tilted lovingly toward him, and her expression is peaceful and happy. St. Joseph, in green and yellow, carries a flowering staff. A tiny dove hovers directly above the Child and radiates light toward him. 7"x 10" Provenance: ex-Kelley collection, Colorado.
