Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th century. Beautifully hand-painted on heavy gauge tin, a retablo depicting San Nicola, the patron saint of children, bakers, brides, as well as spinsters, standing and wearing a Franciscan habit, gazing toward his right, and holding a pastry on a platter with a white dove perched upon it as well as a blossoming white lily in his left hand, while making an open-handed gesture with his right hand. He is indoors, beside a table covered in a red cloth with a cup holding a warm beverage (notice the steam rising from its contents) with an open door to the natural world outside at sunrise. Size: 10" W x 14" H (25.4 cm x 35.6 cm)
