Description:

Mexico, ca. 1800-1900. An interesting antique Mexican retablo depicting St. Rita of Cascia. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This retablo depicts St. Rita of Cascia, the Augustinian nun who, along with St. Jude, is the patron saint of impossible causes. Here she is shown wearing the robes of her order, and holding a skull in her left hand. She contemplates a the crucifix in her right hand with a gentle smile. The wound in her forehead is a "partial" stigmata, the result of a thorn from her crucifix, which she received one day while praying. She stands beside a table draped in red cloth, and a green curtain frames the scene. Beneath her feet are the words "St Rita do Cacia" in elaborate script. 7" x 5" Provenance: ex-Kelley collection, Colorado.
