Description:

Native American, Plains, possibly Lakota, Dakota, or Nakota, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A mallet and hand held drum made from tree bark with a deer or buffalo hide skin stretched over each face, and adorned by an attractive band of alternating red and green nested triangles framed by a scalloped white and black border design on the side walls. To the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota people, the drum is much more than a musical instrument; it also holds great cultural and symbolic power. The indigenous believe that the drum has a life of its own, as well as its own powerful spirit - and that it symbolizes the heartbeat of the Indian Nation. The drum carries the heartbeat of Mother Earth and calls the spirits and nations together. Size: 7" in diameter x 4" H (17.8 cm x 10.2 cm); mallet is 9.75" L (24.8 cm)

  • Condition: Drum shows expected age wear with nicks and scratches, but the form is still strong and creates a resonant sound. Normal wear to pigment but design is still vivid. Some tears to fabric covering head of the mallet and fading to pigmentation of its stem, but otherwise very good.
