Description:

Magna Graecia, Apulian Gnathian, ca. late 4th century BCE. A wonderful trefoil-lipped oinochoe depicting an unusual scene on the shoulder - a man holding a cup over a krater with rosettes and fillets in the field and a beaded groundline, all in characteristically Gnathian pinkish-red and white hues. Gnathian pieces present unusual imagery now and again, but this scene is quite rare. Overall, a lovely example that demonstrates skillful technique and a beautiful polychromatic effect by introducing additional pigments to a black glazed vessel. A special example from Gnathia. Size: 4.4" W x 7.2" H (11.2 cm x 18.3 cm)
