Description:

Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 380–350 BCE. An imposing red-figure bell krater from Magna Graecia, masterfully crafted with a wide, flaring rim, deep tapering body, and a pronounced pedestal foot. Two elegant, upturned handles rise from the shoulder, arching inward in classic Apulian form. The vessel’s surface is adorned with rich red-figure decoration set against a lustrous black-glazed ground. A continuous band of wave motif runs below the figural scenes and beneath the rim, while large palmettes with extended tendrils are symmetrically arranged beneath each handle—hallmarks of South Italian vase painting. Size: 14.17" W x 13.35" H (36 cm x 33.9 cm)

Side A presents a poignant scene of departure for war. A nude male figure, cloaked only in a chlamys draped over his left arm, strides forward with a long staff in his right hand. A large shield leans beside him. Facing him is a draped female figure, her hands raised in a gesture of farewell, conveying emotional gravity and intimacy.

Side B features two robed women in calm conversation. Each stands in relaxed posture, clad in long chitons and himatia, their subtle gestures suggesting dialogue—perhaps a quieter counterpart to the more dramatic scene opposite.
