Description:

**Originally Listed At $250**

Native American, Eastern Woodlands, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 3000 BCE to 1000 CE. A large ground stone celt, expertly shaped from dense, fine grained stone and exhibiting the elongated, tapered form characteristic of Eastern Woodlands woodworking tools. The celt is plano convex in profile, with a smoothly rounded poll and a carefully beveled working edge, now softened through long use and time. The surface shows extensive grinding and polishing, producing a mottled gray and brown patina that speaks to both the quality of the raw material and the skill of its maker. Subtle variations in tone and texture across the body reflect repeated handling and contact with wood, consistent with use as an adze or axe blade hafted into a wooden handle. Size: 8.8" L x 3.1" W (22.4 cm x 7.9 cm)

Celts of this scale were essential implements in daily and communal life, used for felling trees, shaping timbers, and constructing dwellings, canoes, and other wooden objects. Beyond their practical role, finely made examples such as this also carried social significance, reflecting control over resources, labor, and technical knowledge within Eastern Woodlands societies. This celt stands as a powerful expression of Indigenous engineering and material intelligence, embodying both utility and refinement. Its substantial size, balanced proportions, and well preserved surface make it a compelling example of Eastern Woodlands stone tool traditions.
