Description:

South America, Argentina, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. An elegant mate cup (gourd) crafted in high-purity silver, testing between 86% and 88% silver content. The body features a graceful baluster stem with a threaded bolt running through to a flared, hollow foot with a scalloped edge, creating a bell-shaped profile. The vessel bears no visible hallmarks and appears to be an antique piece, showing excellent craftsmanship and patina from age. Accompanying the cup is a vintage brass bombilla straw with a strainer end finely pierced with tiny holes; the strainer unscrews from the shaft for cleaning. The straw is stamped "Industria Mamboreta, Argentina" and the mouthpiece carries a rubbed and indistinct gold hallmark, suggesting it was originally gold-plated and has worn with use. Size of cup: 3.5" Diameter x 7.5" H (8.9 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's
