Description:

Attributed to Tiffany & Company, Stained Glass Window, ca. 1907. An exquisite Art Nouveau curved stained glass window attributed to Tiffany & Co. by Howard Williams of High Style Deco, NYC. The composition of this piece features interlocking demilune arch textured glass forms of opalescent seafoam and translucent emerald green hues married by petite pie-shaped elements of citrine glass. All is mounted in a concave walnut frame. Underscoring the composition is a band of ovoid forms in emerald green with stylized floral blossom motifs in citrine. Finally two horizontal bands of citrine pieces complete the piece, one accenting the ovoid forms and one running across beneath. Size: 45.5" L x 26.5" W x 7" depth of curve (115.6 cm x 67.3 cm x 17.8 cm)

The opalescence of the seafoam glass pieces is of note. In 1881, Tiffany registered the patent for opalescent window glass created via a technique in which several colors were combined in a manner that resulted in a remarkable myriad of hues and three-dimensional effects. According to Tiffany, this new technique allowed one to be truer to the inherent qualities of the glass medium, because it was a product of the glass itself rather than painting on glass. Also of note are the floral motifs underscoring the composition, a testament to Tiffany's belief that art should be inspired by nature. This notion of being truthful was central to the Arts and Crafts movement's philosophy which also influenced Mr. Tiffany.
