Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Western New Guinea, Asmat people, ca. mid-20th century CE. This large ceremonial shield is hand-carved from a single piece of wood taken from the buttress roots of a mangrove tree. Its etched design conveys aggression and spiritual power through abstract motifs symbolizing animals and elemental forces. The obverse features a central arched handle and a protruding anthropomorphic head at the top. White and ochre-orange pigments highlight the bold carved forms, with red-ochre accents evoking the blood soon to be shed. Such shields were created and displayed during ceremonial feasts to inspire warriors and proclaim collective strength before a raid. Each was named for a revered ancestor, carrying their protection and bravery into battle while preserving the lineage and legacy of the one whose name it bore. Size: 54" L x 12.5" W (137.2 cm x 31.8 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's
