Lot 25
Greek, Attic, Classical period, ca. 5th century BCE. A charming example of Attic pottery from the Classical period, this finely crafted kylix embodies the elegant form and balanced proportions characteristic of its era. The vessel rests on a low, pedestal foot and features a shallow, wide bowl with a broad rim and thin walls flanked by twin horizontal handles that flare outward like wings - an iconic silhouette in Greek ceramic design. While the interior remains relatively restrained, it is tastefully adorned with a thick black band encircling the rim, followed by a slender concentric ring and a central target motif, lending the surface a sense of quiet order. In contrast, the exterior is richly embellished in the black-figure technique with a rhythmic pattern of vegetal motifs resembling shafts of wheat, followed by undulating striations that create a dynamic visual texture. Beneath one handle, a delicately rendered laurel leaf design adds an elegant touch. Size: 13.3" L x 9.8" W x 4" H (33.8 cm x 24.9 cm x 10.2 cm)
Used for drinking wine at symposia, kylixes such as this not only served practical functions but also offered opportunities for both aesthetic enjoyment and cultural expression. The vegetal motifs may allude to themes of fertility, abundance, or agricultural prosperity - common symbolic associations in Classical Greek art.
