Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Oaxaca, Zapotec, ca. 500 to 750 CE. An intriguing figural fragment representing an effigy from a Zapotec pottery urn. The most spectacular art of Oaxaca emerged from the large archaeological site of Monte Alban. Impressive figural urn effigies are unique to the Zapotec sculptural traditions of the Late Preclassic and Classic periods. Most portray persons dressed as specific gods, especially the rain deity Cociyo and the maize god Pitao Cozobi. While this piece is a fragment, the visage presents a strong representation with its magnificent feathered headdress that is further adorned with a central raised zoomorphic head, bold disc shaped ear ornament, and deeply incised as well as openwork details. A fabulous piece with traces of red pigment and mineral deposits remaining on the surface. Size: head itself measures 3.75" W x 6.125" H (9.5 cm x 15.6 cm); 8.875" H (22.5 cm) on stand.
