Description:

Oceania, Australia, Aboriginal, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful, hand-painted eucalyptus bark painting using traditional Aboriginal techniques and featuring stylized iconography of people in a boat paddling over a trio of animals - a turtle and a pair of ambiguous creatures - perhaps fish or crocodilians. This painting was done in the traditional style of West Arnhem Land, which is part of the oldest continuous tradition of painting (from rock art to bark) known in the world. The colors are created from naturally occurring plants and the motifs often depict stories or events from the Dreamtime or totem animals. "Dreamtime" refers to the Aboriginal religious-cultural concept of "Everywhen," when ancestral figures and animals with supernatural abilities inhabited the land. Size: 24.75" L x 10" W (62.9 cm x 25.4 cm)
