Description:

Valley of Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 1400 - 1550 CE. Two-note ceramic ocarina with a red-slipped mouthpiece, and an abstract monkey molded on the body. This ocarina has a fantastic and bright sound, and is also a masterpiece of abstract art, which is probably why the famous Pre-Columbian scholar Von Winning found it so attractive. Using just one strand of clay with two paws at the ends to suggest a body, and two off-center eyes, the artist produced a Picasso-like abstract monkey. 2-3/4"L x 1-1/4"W. Provenance: Ex-L. Kalina Collection, ex- Hasso Von Winning Collection. The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.
