Lot 391
**Originally Listed At $100**
Ancient Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A rare and evocative leaded bronze coal or cosmetic jar accompanied by its original copper applicator. The small vessel features a bulbous body tapering into a narrow neck with a flared rim, supported on an open tripod base of arched legs joined by a circular ring. This dynamic structure gives the jar both lightness and stability, an ingenious design for ritual or cosmetic use. Rising from the mouth is a long copper rod, likely used to stir, grind, or apply pigments, ash, or kohl. The surface bears an ancient green and brown patina, with traces of oxidation and mineral accretions that attest to great age. Such objects are associated with Bactrian cosmetic or ritual practices, where powdered pigments or coals were prepared for application to the eyes or for incense-burning in ceremonial contexts. The combination of leaded bronze and copper demonstrates metallurgical sophistication and aesthetic unity, characteristic of early Bactrian craftsmanship. Size: 1.8" W x 5" H (4.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
This rare survival encapsulates the refined daily and ritual culture of one of Central Asia's earliest civilizations, where metallurgy, beauty, and belief were deeply intertwined.
