Ivory Coast, . A standing male spirit spouse (blolo bian), Baule peoples, Côte d'Ivoire, early to mid-20th century. Carved in hardwood with warm red-brown patina, the nude male figure stands with hands in relief flanking a prominent navel, on an integral base. The face bears relief scarification on brow, temples, and chin; the elongated neck shows further scarification marks. The high fan-shaped coiffure is finely incised with parallel striations, with braided side falls. Age cracks throughout; long crack on leg blackened with use; shard reglued to integral base. Mounted on a custom black-painted wooden base. Size: 13”H (33cm).
Provenance: Ex. Jean-Paul Del Court, Paris, collected 1950’s - 1970’s.
