Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 19th century CE. A beautiful kou wood bowl that rests on a rounded, thick base, with walls that flare upward and gradually narrow to a thin lip. The wood is finely polished to show off the natural graining of the kou which has lovely hues of caramel and honey brown. Kou wood has long been coveted by Hawaiian royalty due to its rich color and attractive grain patterns. Bowls like this one were traditionally carved using tools of stone and coral, and perhaps used for grand ceremonies and feasts held by Hawaiian elites. A fine example! Size: 4.5" Diameter x 3.125" H (11.4 cm x 7.9 cm)
