Description:

Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom to Late Dynastic Period, 12th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1991 to 332 BCE. A beautiful jar of a globular form, hand-carved from white stone, likely alabaster, a round but stable body supporting the broad rim. The walls of the jar are thick, giving a substantial weight to this piece, however the neck has been carved to a thinness that visibly glows when illuminated from within. The polished texture and spherical shape is extremely aesthetically pleasing, the symmetry of this example demonstrates exceptional artistry. Alabaster was quarried along the length of the Nile, from Giza to just south of Luxor, and the Egyptians made carved alabaster pieces famous throughout the ancient world. The piece was drilled into, and then special tools were used to expand the drilled-upon areas. Size: 5.5" Diameter x 5" H (14 cm x 12.7 cm)
