Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A modern stringing of faience beads - seed beads interspersed with long cylindrical beads - and an abstract, almost ankh-shaped sky blue faience amulet. All of the beads are in shades of blue, blue-green, and cream. "Egyptian faience" was known as "tjehnet" to the ancient Egyptians, meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements, including copper oxide, which gave it its distinct blue/green tint. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. With gold plated sterling silver findings. Length of strand: 19" L (48.3 cm); size of amulet: 0.35" W x 0.65" H (0.9 cm x 1.7 cm)

Provenance: beads from a private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; restrung in Colorado, USA
