Lot 70A
**Originally Listed At $350**
Near East, Yemen, Bedouin culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely coin pendant made from a silver Austrian thaler coin with silver chains and bells. Obverse features the Bust of Maria Theresa facing right, surrounded by text, and the obverse is the eagle coat of arms and inscription. For many years, Yemenite silversmiths were almost entirely Jewish, and Bedouin women primarily wore this jewelry as signs of status. Bells are believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and protect the wearer and announce their presence. The thaler coin was first minted in 1741, in honor of Maria Theresa, ruler of Austria-Hungary, and Bohemia from 1740 to 1780, after her death (and to this day) the coins continued to be minted and all are struck 1780. In 1857 the Austrian Emperor declared the Maria Theresa thaler as the official trade coinage, and it quickly became the main form od currency in large parts of Africa and the Middle East until after World War II. Size: 4.5" L x 2.75" W (11.4 cm x 7 cm); silver quality: 80.74% to 94.89%; weight: 76.7 grams
Yemen's geographical position between India and Africa and gateway to the Red Sea, made it a major shipping route and trading partner for the Austrian Empire, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. Yemeni goods such as coffee, spices, and incense were highly prized in Europe, and Austrian merchants played a leading role in the trade between Yemen and the West.
