Description:

Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Baskt Cotn" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed down right margin and titled down left. A vivid tribute to memory and labor, "Baskt Cotn" by Black Joe Jackson captures a moment of gesture and grace in a single lyrical figure. Painted in thick, joyous house paint on found plywood, the image shows a woman in a pink polka-dotted dress lifting her arms skyward beneath a rolling bank of clouds. At her feet, a basket brims with cotton - the titular "baskt cotn" - rendered in soft, ghostly grays. The background swirls with raw texture, its layers scratched and sponged like the land itself. The title, written vertically on both sides of the panel in Jackson's distinctive script, reflects the artist's lifelong dyslexia and his practice of spelling phonetically. Far from obscuring meaning, the text becomes part of the visual rhythm - folk poetry woven into paint. Size: 12" W x 16.5" H (30.5 cm x 41.9 cm)

About the Artist: Black Joe Jackson was a self-taught African-American artist born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta, Georgia in 1920. Jackson created paintings on wooden boards and used easily available materials such as house paint an scrap wood. He was born with dyslexia, and the writings on his paintings demonstrate this. He is oftentimes described as a folk artist or an outsider artist due to his playful, naive style. Jackson's themes reflect memories from his childhood in the South.
