Lot 5A
Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Bulwbery Pickn Da" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed down left margin and titled down right margin. "Bulwbery Pickn Da" by Black Joe Jackson, a self-taught folk artist from the American South, is a captivating glimpse into a world of rural labor and vibrant memory. Jackson, who often used humble materials like house paint on wood, transforms the act of berry picking into a scene of almost rhythmic grace. Figures in white attire, rendered with a raw yet expressive simplicity, move across a field that explodes in a symphony of hues: spring green, viridian, lavender, and violet dance across the canvas, creating an impressionistic tapestry of color. In the foreground, a younger figure, seemingly lost in the sweet delight of the harvest, enjoys the blueberries, a subtle reminder of the simple joys intertwined with the task at hand. Size: 16" W x 22.75" H (40.6 cm x 57.8 cm)
The sky, a canvas of light periwinkle and gray, adds a layer of atmospheric depth, while Jackson's distinctive, somewhat idiosyncratic lettering lends a unique, lyrical quality to the work. This painting is not just a depiction of a task; it's a window into Jackson's personal history and cultural heritage, imbued with a sense of nostalgia and the enduring spirit of human connection to the land.
About the Artist: Black Joe Jackson was a self-taught African-American artist born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta, Georgia in 1920. Jackson created paintings on wooden boards and used easily available materials such as house paint an scrap wood. He was born with dyslexia, and the writings on his paintings demonstrate this. He is oftentimes described as a folk artist or an outsider artist due to his playful, naive style. Jackson's themes reflect memories from his childhood in the South.
