Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Da Club" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed down left margin and titled down right margin. A whirl of movement and color, "Da Club" captures the rhythm of the night through Black Joe Jackson's signature folk style - bold, flat, and pulsing with personality. Two dancers dominate the foreground, locked in a playful, energetic step. The woman swings her arm high, clad in a long yellow dress speckled with lavender spots, while her partner leans in with bent knees and a bright red shirt, sneakers flashing white against the salmon-toned floor. Behind them, the bar fades into a quiet haze where two figures sit sipping from white mugs. Bottles linger like ghosts on the counter. Hovering above, a hand-painted sign or window reads "Danzn nite" in reverse - a visual nod to both dyslexia and delight, offering a glimpse into Jackson's unique way of seeing and storytelling. Size: 12" W x 15" H (30.5 cm x 38.1 cm)

The vertical inscriptions framing the composition read "Black Joe Jackson" on the left and "Da Club" on the right, painted in the same raw script that dances across so many of Jackson's works. Born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta, Georgia in 1920, Jackson was self-taught and dyslexic, and often used house paint and scrap plywood to create vibrant images rooted in memory and community.

Though often categorized as an outsider artist, Jackson's work is deeply inward - a reflection of the lived Black experience in the American South, rendered with humor, warmth, and undeniable flair. In "Da Club", the paint hums with music you can almost hear, the scene immortalizing not just a moment of dance but a celebration of life, connection, and homegrown joy.
