Description:

Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Dat Danz" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed down left margin and titled at lower right. A celebration in motion, "Dat Danz" is a vibrant and joy-filled painting by Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922–1997), created in house paint on plywood. A woman dressed in a deep indigo gown, speckled with golden bursts, dances across a lively, polka-dotted field of pink. Her body curves rhythmically, her limbs lifted in expressive movement as she turns toward a bright jukebox in the upper right - a beacon of music, memory, and freedom. The work's spelling - "Dat Danz" - and the spirited figure's kinetic poise reflect Jackson's joyful reverence for Southern Black culture and memory. Born to a sharecropping family near Atlanta, Georgia, Jackson filled his works with reminiscences of his youth in the rural South. Size: 12" W x 15" H (30.5 cm x 38.1 cm)

Though dyslexic, he inscribed his paintings with phonetic captions, often vertically along the panel's edge, transforming what might have been a limitation into a distinctive hallmark of his visual language. Jackson was self-taught and resourceful, painting on scrap wood with house paint. In "Dat Danz," that improvisational spirit becomes part of the dance itself. The jukebox hums not only with music, but with recollections of juke joints, backyard parties, and a community's will to celebrate amid hardship. Playful and powerful, this painting is both portrait and performance - a rhythmic echo of lived experience.
