Description:

Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "GetnHom" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed down left margin and titled at lower right. Painted on a salvaged plywood panel with house paint, "GetnHom" is a vivid example of Black Joe Jackson's distinctive, self-taught style. In this work, a silhouetted Black woman strides purposefully across the picture plane after a long day picking cotton. Dressed in a solid olive green and rendered in bold, flattened shapes, she carries a light-colored woven basket in one hand - likely filled with her harvest - while grasping a stick with the other. Her forward-leaning posture and the energetic upward strokes of her hair capture a sense of motion and resolve, as if she is moving swiftly toward the relief and familiarity of home. Behind her, Jackson layers broad swaths of blue, purple, and earthy brown, evoking the open fields and deep Southern skies of dusk. Size: 12.5" W x 16" H (31.8 cm x 40.6 cm)

The title, "GetnHom" - a phonetic spelling of "gettin' home" - is scrawled in Jackson's signature hand across the lower center, reinforcing the theme of return and resilience. Born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta, Georgia in 1920, Black Joe Jackson was a self-taught African-American artist who created deeply personal works using house paint and found materials. Dyslexic and largely working outside the formal art world, Jackson's misspelled titles and raw visual style reflect both his lived experience and his creative authenticity. Often described as a folk or outsider artist, Jackson drew on memories of his Southern upbringing to depict scenes of labor, endurance, and spiritual reflection with striking emotional clarity. "GetnHom" stands as a testament to that vision - a humble, powerful meditation on daily life, persistence, and the deeply human act of returning home.
