Description:

Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Goin on Hom Bo" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed down right margin and titled down left margin. Painted on a found plywood panel, Goin On Hom Bo is a compelling example of Black Joe Jackson's raw, expressive visual language. Executed in house paint, the work presents a stylized Black figure in profile, striding to the right with the aid of a twisted walking stick. At his heel trots an irresistibly cute puppy - small, black, and round-bodied, with soft gray markings and an alert stance that adds charm and liveliness to the composition. The background is divided simply: a textured maroon upper field above a mottled beige and brown ground, evoking a Southern path stretching into the distance. The flattened space, limited palette, and bold, unrefined forms speak to Jackson's intuitive approach and deep connection to his subject matter. Size: 11.75" W x 16.75" H (29.8 cm x 42.5 cm)

The title, Goin On Hom Bo, is a phonetic rendering of the phrase "Goin' on home, boy" - a colloquialism rooted in Southern Black speech, and a nod to the artist's upbringing in rural Georgia. Born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta in 1920, Jackson was a self-taught African-American artist who worked with scrap wood, house paint, and other found materials. He was dyslexic, and the spellings on his paintings reflect his personal, unfiltered voice. Often described as a folk or outsider artist, Jackson developed a playful, direct style that blends memory, observation, and spiritual undercurrents. His works frequently reflect scenes from his youth in the South, and Goin On Hom Bo may be read both as a literal walk home and a metaphor for life's journey - infused with quiet humor, dignity, and a deep-rooted sense of place.
