Lot 206
Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Pikn Leks" housepaint on plywood, n.d. Signed down right margin and titled down left margin. With his signature wit and unapologetic visual rhythm, Black Joe Jackson brings rural memory to life in "Pikn Leks", a playful rendering of a woman bent in the act of foraging, her form blooming with stylized vigor. Painted in housepaint on scrap plywood, the work is as direct and grounded as the Georgia soil from which Jackson's memories sprang. The title, a phonetically spelled twist on "picking leeks," highlights the artist's joyful embrace of language shaped by lived experience and his lifelong dyslexia - transforming words into image, sound into form. The central figure, crouched low in a light pink floral dress, stretches through a lush and animated field, surrounded by thick brush and under a swirling blue-gray sky. The exaggerated curve of her back, the bend of her arm, and the crisp silhouette of her black figure evoke movement, strength, and purpose. Size: 14.25" W x 14" H (36.2 cm x 35.6 cm)
The bold flatness and graphic simplicity of her dress - patterned like a patchwork quilt - echoes the artist's folk sensibility, born from a life of improvisation and resourcefulness.
About the Artist: Black Joe Jackson was a self-taught African-American artist born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta, Georgia in 1920. Jackson created paintings on wooden boards and used easily available materials such as house paint an scrap wood. He was born with dyslexia, and the writings on his paintings demonstrate this. He is oftentimes described as a folk artist or an outsider artist due to his playful, naive style. Jackson's themes reflect memories from his childhood in the South.
