Description:

Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Swig It" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed down left margin and titled at upper right. A dynamic house paint on plywood painting by Black Joe Jackson titled "Swig It," a phonetic spelling of "Swing It." The work depicts a figure in a flowing purple dress caught mid-motion, one arm raised above the head and the other curling inward, as if pulled into the rhythm of music. The composition is set against a patterned yellow and cream floor and a pale blue backdrop, grounding the dancer within an interior space while emphasizing the energy of movement. Jackson's characteristic inscriptions run along the vertical margins of the panel, their idiosyncratic phonetic spelling a signature element tied to his lifelong dyslexia, which lent his text a uniquely personal rhythm akin to the movement he painted. Size: 12" W x 15.25" H (30.5 cm x 38.7 cm)

Like much of Jackson's work, "Swig It" channels memories of Southern life into bold imagery that merges humor, vitality, and cultural expression. Painted in house paint on plywood, materials readily available to the artist, the piece exemplifies his standing as a self-taught folk artist whose imagery is infused with immediacy and authenticity. Here, dance becomes both subject and metaphor: a celebration of resilience, joy, and the expressive force of the body in motion, rendered with the playful, narrative style that has made Jackson's paintings celebrated within the tradition of outsider art.

About the Artist: Black Joe Jackson was a self-taught African-American artist born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta, Georgia in 1920. Jackson created paintings on wooden boards and used easily available materials such as house paint an scrap wood. He was born with dyslexia, and the writings on his paintings demonstrate this. He is oftentimes described as a folk artist or an outsider artist due to his playful, naive style. Jackson's themes reflect memories from his childhood in the South.
