Description:

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Music in Ceremony" watercolor and gouache on heavy-weight archival paper, 2009. Signature with date at lower right. A wonderful painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton depicting Native American petroglyphs from the Billings, Montana area showing several deer, bear paws, and the silhouette of a human, all paired with a Northern Arapaho rattle. The petroglyphs in this area include hunting imagery as well as scenes of people playing instruments, which is why the artist chose to incorporate the rattle. However, the joining of these themes seems to point towards a deeper meaning on the human need to communicate through art, whether it be visual via paint or auditory via song. Size of painting: 11" W x 30" H (27.9 cm x 76.2 cm); of frame: 2.5" Deep x 15.5" W x 34.5" H (6.4 cm x 39.4 cm x 87.6 cm)

Rendered in lovely, natural tones of umber, sienna, and tan, the composition conveys the importance of human connection, and highlights the people of the past may speak to those of the present through the mediums of visual art and inherited musical tradition. A very special painting, replete with impressive artistry as well as layers of historical and cultural meaning, that is floated upon a backdrop painted by the artist to resemble bison hide. Halsey-Dutton has used a deep acrylic shadowbox framing to underscore the cultural importance of the theme and suggest a treasured museum artifact. This piece is painted on heavy-weight archival watercolor paper, and the manner of paint application was intended to convey age and weathering. In addition, the paper's deckled edge further imbues the piece with a sense of history.

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton was born and raised in South Dakota and is inspired by the local cultures where she resides as well as their history. She has provided the following statement about this piece, "There are many forms of rock art in the area in which I live. The oldest are known as pecktoglyphs. They are pecked into a rock surface with little dots. Then came the more widely known petroglyphs, which are etched into rock in a linear format, outlining the figure depicted. Lastly, are pictographs, which are rendered in a variety of painting medium onto the rock surface. Many ancient sites appear to have particular significance, as the imagery is overlapping, utilizing the different styles of recording. I find that fascinating!

The petroglyphs I am replicating are from the Billings, MT area, and some seemed to be images of people playing instruments as well as hunting imagery. Because of this, I pared them with a Northern Arapaho rattle to help convey the idea of sound and ceremony."
