Description:

Central Europe, Bronze Age, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A fascinating lot of two personal and ritual objects from the Bronze Age, illustrating both the spiritual and ornamental aspects of early European society. The first, a miniature copper axe head, features a flared blade and socketed body with a shallow depression along the hafting area. Too small for practical use, it was likely created as a votive offering - a symbolic weapon cast in reverence to a deity or as a token of status, sacrifice, or protection. The second object is a tightly wound brass hair coil, formed from a continuous spiral of wire, its metallic sheen dulled to a deep green patina from centuries of burial. Such coils were worn by women and occasionally men, often serving both as jewelry and as a marker of social identity within Bronze Age communities. Together, these two artifacts speak to the intersection of ritual and adornment during the Bronze Age, when metal was both a tool of survival and a medium of sacred expression. Size of larger (votive axe head): 2.3" L x 0.4" W (5.8 cm x 1 cm)
