Lot 157
Central Asia, Nepal / Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A magnificent gold washed-copper votive shikharakuta chaitya (small temple-stupa) statue of ornate, multi-tiered form, the domed base rising from a lotus-petal plinth symbolizing spiritual purity. The bulbous body is adorned with cascading beaded garlands terminating in tiny bells, representing offerings and celestial abundance. A torana-style arched niche with relief figures of auspicious beings and a fierce kirtimukha masks the entrance, within which sits the Buddha Amitayus in deep meditation atop a lotus throne, holding the kalasha - the sacred ambrosia vessel containing the elixir of immortality. Above, the conical spire is crowned by a finial inlaid with enamel and coral cabochons. The hollow base is capped with a copper plate stamped with a dorje symbol - perhaps sealing prayer or offerings inside. A splendid devotional object embodying the ideals of longevity, enlightenment, and cosmic order. Size: 8.5" W x 16" H (21.6 cm x 40.6 cm); gold quality: 3% to 11%
Chaityas serve as a symbolic reliquary and miniature representation of the cosmic stupa, created as an offering to accumulate merit and express devotion. Such chaityas were often consecrated within temples, monasteries, or pilgrimage sites to honor the Buddha and embody the aspiration for enlightenment and rebirth in the celestial realms.
